One of the major obstacles to increasing textile recycling rates is lack of access to recycling facilities– especially when people want to recycle larger quantities of textiles in one go. The more opportunities people have to recycle easily, the more likely it is they will do so. TRAID’s answer has been to launch a completely new textile recycling scheme – a free home collections service offering households scheduled pickups direct from their door. Booking a collection ensures that:-
- Donations are not left outside vulnerable to the weather or theft
- Gives households a way a completely hassle free way to recycle unwanted clothing, which in turn encourages more recycling
- Allows TRAID to engage directly with householders giving us an opportunity to provide information about the benefits of recycling
The service proved immediately popular and in 2012, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) approached TRAID to deliver our free home collection service in the borough.
TRAID’s home collection services runs alongside and complements our existing network of charity textile banks placed at strategic points in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea offering residents multiple free, easy and convenient ways to recycle their unwanted clothing. The partnership has been a great success with TRAID and the council recycling team working closely together to raise awareness of the scheme to residents who have the option of booking a collection online, by phone or by email.
