V&A to host Clothes Swap

Advocates for sustainability in the fashion industry GFX and West London Waste Authority have joined forces to host a clothing swap and pop up talks on Sunday 1st July from 10am – 5:15pm at the V&A South Kensington. Check in at 10am – 12pm with your swap items, talks start at 12pm and swap opens at 2:30pm.

TRAID is delighted to be taking part giving a talk on why giving longer life to our clothes matters and collecting any clothes left over after the swap so they can reused and resold in our charity shops.

We throw away around 300,000 tonnes of textiles, resulting in over 5% of the UK’s annual carbon and water footprint– of these disposed textiles, only 16% are reused. If everyone wore their clothes more, we could reduce carbon, water and waste footprints by 20-30%. To put things into perspective – most people wear their clothing for an average of 7 days, when the average should be three years.

“West London Waste Authority (WLWA) is responsible for around 1.7 million people in London.” says Emma Hall of WLWA. “It is our responsibility to educate our residents on the gravity of textile waste and the efforts that can be taken to rectify the situation, which is why we are excited to be hosting this event with GFX.”

GFX is an international platform which promotes sustainability in the fashion industry. Through forums, content and events, GFX works to empower consumers to save the environment and renew their wardrobe without letting it go to waste.

GFX founder Patrick Duffy says, “At GFX, we’re all about changing the world, one stylishly renewed wardrobe at a time. We believe in looking at the bigger picture, and our hope is to get everyone, from all walks of life, excited and mobilized to take action for a better planet. London is a fashion hub bursting with a multitude of styles embraced by men and women alike – a city where every sidewalk is a catwalk for incredible fashion and influence through personal style. There was no doubt in my mind that London should play host to such an event that could truly make an impactful difference. Our Global GFX swaps make saving the environment exciting and aspirational, AND find me someone who doesn’t love getting a new wardrobe for free!”

The event will be hosted at the iconic V&A South Kensington, known for its spectacular fashion exhibitions, including their current exhibition ‘Fashioned From Nature’ which runs until January 27th 2019.
