Projects - Past
Azafady – Project Salama, Madagascar

Madagascar is one of the world's poorest countries, with 71% of the population living below the poverty line and a one in ten children not living past the age of five. Over 73% of the population live in rural areas and rely on slash and burn agriculture which has resulted in Madagascar losing 117,000 hectares of its already depleted forest cover. Problems such as poverty, deforestation, soil erosion, poor health and lack of education are seen in their most extreme form in the Tolangnaro (Fort Dauphin) region of the island.

Azafady is charity that aims to alleviate human poverty whilst protecting a biologically rich but greatly endangered environment. In 2005, TRAID donated £20,000 to Azafady's Project Salama to work with up to 10,000 community members of the Tolagnaro area to identify local health and sanitation problems and to implement solutions. TRAID's donation has contributed towards the construction of village wells, building toilets in schools and individual homes, stocking village pharmacies, regular visits by a mobile doctor and training for a network of health promoters who will increase communities' understanding and use of infrastructure.
