Oxfam: Darfur and Chad Crisis
"There was a lot of shooting everywhere, we had to run. We saw soldiers coming in a car, we thought it was the army and let go of our children's hands. But it was the rebels and they started shooting, that's when we lost our children."
Refugee in Chad
The crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan is now entering its sixth year. The level of suffering continues on an almost unimaginable scale.
- Over 4.5 million people in Darfur and eastern Chad in need of humanitarian aid
- 2.5 million people living in difficult and dangerous conditions in overcrowded camps
- Intensifying violence driving more and more people to the camps
Oxfam have been responding to the emergency since 2004 and are helping more than half a million people in Darfur and Chad. In 2007, TRAID donated over £6,000 to support Oxfam's work in the region. Funds raised by TRAID are being used by Oxfam towards:
- Providing clean water and sanitation facilities – drilling wells, setting up water tanks, digging latrines, and building washing facilities
- Distributing essential items such as blankets, utensils, and clean clothes
- Working to reduce people’s dependency on aid, through setting up training schemes and providing animals and farming tools
- Training community volunteers to promote good health and hygiene
